Saint-Étienne Facing a Defining Promotion Battle
Back-to-back defeats have left Saint-Étienne outside Ligue 2’s top two, and a difficult trip to Rodez now threatens to push the club even farther from automatic promotion.
Saint-Étienne head into the penultimate Ligue 2 weekend with little margin for error. What recently looked like a strong promotion push has turned into a tense fight to avoid the playoff route, with the Greens slipping to third after two damaging defeats.
Promotion race tightening at the worst time
Saturday’s schedule could reshape the top of Ligue 2. Two high-stakes fixtures stand out: Le Mans vs. Reims and Rodez vs. Saint-Étienne. With only two rounds left, both matches carry major consequences for the race to Ligue 1.
Saint-Étienne have fallen behind Le Mans and now sit one point off the automatic promotion places. That matters enormously. Finishing third would not send ASSE directly up, but instead into a far more complicated path: a playoff against the winner of the 4th-versus-5th matchup, followed by another showdown against the team finishing 16th in Ligue 1. As things stand, that opponent would be Auxerre.
The timing could hardly be worse for Philippe Montanier’s side. Consecutive losses to Bastia and Troyes have stalled their momentum and handed control to their rivals. Troyes, in particular, used its 3-0 win at Geoffroy-Guichard to seal promotion with two matches still to play.
Goalkeeper Gautier Larsonneur admitted this week that the latest setback had been difficult to absorb, saying the result from last weekend had hurt everyone around the squad.
Rodez away offers no relief
Saint-Étienne’s next challenge is anything but comfortable. Rodez, currently sixth, still have ambitions of their own and could further complicate the Greens’ situation with a home win.
That makes Saturday night especially perilous. While Saint-Étienne try to reclaim a top-two position, Rodez are chasing an opening of their own in the playoff race. Elsewhere, Le Mans and Reims meeting directly guarantees movement among the clubs around ASSE, while Red Star also remain in the mix with a favorable game against bottom-side Amiens.
In other words, Saint-Étienne are not just trying to recover form — they are trying to survive a crowded, volatile promotion battle.
Davitashvili absence is a major blow
The challenge is made even harder by the absence of Zuriko Davitashvili, arguably Saint-Étienne’s most influential attacking player this season. The Georgian winger is sidelined with an ankle sprain and will miss the trip to Rodez.
His numbers underline the loss: 13 goals and 4 assists in 28 matches this season. After contributing strongly in Ligue 1 last year as well, he has been one of ASSE’s main difference-makers throughout the campaign.
There is still some hope he could return for the final home match against Amiens, but for now Saint-Étienne must navigate one of their biggest games of the season without him.
Injury concerns continue to mount
Montanier does have some slightly better news elsewhere, with Julien Le Cardinal expected to be available. But the broader injury picture remains troubling.
Chico Lamba is dealing with a stress fracture, while Aïmen Moueffek has taken a significant knock to the calf. Montanier acknowledged that the run of physical setbacks has been difficult to explain, but insisted his team must find the character to push through the adversity.
That may define Saint-Étienne’s season.
With two games left, promotion is still within reach. But after recent results, the Greens are no longer in control — and another stumble could leave one of France’s biggest clubs facing a long and uncertain route back to Ligue 1.
